First Growth White? – 9/10 STARS
As usual, most Bordeaux dry whites come from Pessac Leognan or Graves appellation, this one is no different, except that they don’t exist anymore. Since 2009, the grapes that’s used to produce Laville Haut Brion was transferred to La Mission Haut Brion Blanc, so it’s definitely worth picking up some old Laville Haut Brion which was value for money and also quite rare (about 1000 cases of annual production). For a 21 year old wine, it remained fresh on the nose, and I suspect they used a lot of oak for the blend, as I get very thick buttery bouquet as well as the content. Content was a bit too lean and slightly hollow, although still young and fresh. Perhaps I prefer white burgundies much more nowadays, it’s difficult to get impressed by any Bordeaux whites.
