“THE LADY OWNER …

I meet Caroline Frye, the current lady owner of La Lagune, in 2007, she was telling me of all vintages of La Lagune, 05 is to die for. 2 years later I had a sip on a tasting event and I agreed with her. Fast forward to 2015, today I decided to open a bottle and my opinion has not changed. Wine is made very feminine style, surprisingly resolved tannins, great almost chewable dark fruits, loads of juices, very caressing on the palette. Apart from 05, I love 78 & 90. Awesome lady boss!”

Pichon Baron 1995

“MALE CHAUVINIST?

Pichon Baron, as opposed to the feminine Pichon Lalande, is the male chauvinist of the siblings. Power, huge vanilla, coupled with dark cherry fruits dominated the nose. I decanted it for an hour, and thoroughly enjoyed the wine; deep, dark fruits, loads of cherries, layered, complex, it’s like a really gentle gentleman caressing my palette, absolutely first growth standard. Fabulous! 95 is totally undervalued! I didn’t expect it to be so drinkable!”

Joh. Jos. Prüm Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese 2003

  Bok's Rating:

Wehlen · Germany

TYPE – White

GRAPES –Riesling

“Served blind. I enjoyed the nose of a unique, very refined pinewood nose (later to find out the oak comes from Slovenia), perfumed but also some sweetness. The wine was very mineral, sweet, with very faint orange, and weirdly I get slight bubbly character. I’m not good at this, thought it has to be German Riesling.”

Château d’Yquem Y 2011

  Bok's Rating:

Bordeaux Supérieur · France

TYPE – White

GRAPES –Sauvignon Blanc · Sémillon

“GREAT SAUTERNES WHITE!..

Served blind, I thought it was a Riesling from the nose and the palette as the nose do show a lot of Riesling character. Palette was rich, creamy, very sweet, lean and slightly short on the finishing. Later I get honeysuckle, kerosene, mellow after a while and turned extremely balance. I was enjoying this a lot, great effort from the maker of d’yquem!”

Château du Tertre Arsac Margaux Cru Classé 1975

  Bok's Rating:

Bordeaux · France

TYPE – Red

GRAPES –Cabernet Sauvignon · Cabernet Franc · Malbec ·Merlot

“STYLE NEVER CHANGED!

Du Tertre, even as of today’s standard, was still light and thin on fruits, so it was the same 40 years ago with this bottle today. Very faint aged leather nose, coupled with tree bark, light violet and floral fragrance. Body was thin on fruits, pleasant and easy to drink, certainly on the downhill right now and way past its prime.”

#18: Best Value Bordeaux In 1998

Wednesday, 25 March 2015

Today I like to talk about Pessac which I seldom write on. 1998 is a good year for Pessac where they produce some good wines and a prominent wine has to be Domaine de Chevalier 1998! Domaine de Chevalier 1998 exhibit 98’s character of opulence, charm and concentration – beautifully. They are rich and round and in their best times, they become flashy with freshness.

Last Sunday, I opened this bottle in a home dinner. I held this bottle up the previous night. Very easy drinking and gratifying as I drank with my chicken chop and pasta, what I really also enjoy is this Domaine de Chevalier 1998 isn’t expensive to boot yet filled with characteristics of a traditional bordeaux wine!

If you draw your nose to the bottle, immediately it gives a classic Bordeaux notes. Plenty of red and taste of black fruits, with smoky and tobacco that boosted its intense and complex flavors. Just the right acidity without being over powering! Oh speaking of black fruits, I also tasted bunch of sweet cranberries with a silky texture that has the perfect mix of fruits and tannins, ending off in a long velvety fruity finish.

Refined with pure elegance and perfect balance, Domaine de Chevalier 1998 is firm yet fine tannins! A sip will make you go “Aww….wow very bordeaux” . Well, don’t take my words for it, try it for yourself!

Given 10 years, Domaine de Chevalier 1998 starts to drink very well but because it’s produced in 1998, it can be expected to age even more and continue to gain complexity. I would say it still remain versatile, you can age further or savor it in 2015 where the drinking window is still good. This is a vintage to buy!

Now with this newsletter, I am offering my loyal readers a special price of $180, extremely BEST PRICE for a 1998 wine that’s notably famous for Domaine de Chevalier 1998 produced in Pessac!

I give it 92 points! Rated well, drinking well and at such affordable price is really a steal!

Just as the right wine needs good food pairing, Domaine de Chevalier 1998 can pair and drink well with these right bank friends.
