Chateau Gloria St Julien 1987
5 May 2021
Having drank the good vintages of 1982 and 1990 Ch Gloria, I was sold on the price performance quality that has way exceeded my expectation, thus I did not hesitate to grab hold of any Ch Gloria in the 80s. 1987 was a poor vintage in Bordeaux, and it’s definitely a good litmus test for my believe that Gloria should still make good wines despite a poor vintage. My observation was confirmed; Gloria 87 did not disappoint. It has the pedigree of the 1982 Gloria, bouquet of strong sweet cherries which slowly evolved as smoky over the next 30 mins. Palate was with good flavor and good length, except being a watershed vintage I can taste the slightly diluted fruits, just not as jam packed like a strong vintage, another weakness was that the fruits lacked penetration on the palate. But all these can be forgiven for the price and performance for a poor vintage wine. I remembered I tasted a Mouton Rothschild 1987 probably about 7 years ago and how disappointed I was with it. I suspect this Gloria 1987 can easily put Mouton Rothschild 1987 to shame.
