Chateau Lynch Bages 5th Growth Pauillac 1970
9.25 stars
01 July 2022

Lynch Bages in the 1950s till the 1990s vintages have been on a great run, quality is very close to first growth status, in fact, I had so many memorable Lynch Bages that I swear it’s a label that punches way above it’s fifth growth status. I recalled 1959, 1961, 1966, 1978, 1982, 1985, 1990, 1996 as quality that’s easily on par with the best of Pauillac for the respective vintages. 1970 may not be a first-class vintage for Pauillac, but it still put up a stunning exhibition of what an aged Pauillac should be. Bouquet was of stainless-steel metallic nose; it feels like walking into a metal fabrication factory. A sip and the obvious mustiness and aged profile of Bordeaux is showing its very age of 52 years old. Very pleasant and easy drink with moderate complexity, just slightly dry towards the finishing, implying it has reached its plateau and needs to be consumed now.
