NORTHERN RHONE VALLEY: HOME OF THE BEST SYRAH!

Let’s take a break from Bordeaux and Burgundy and travel to the land of Northern Rhone Valley where we can find some of the most sensual, perfumed and long lived Syrah wines in the world!

Syrah is currently becoming a popular grape because of its counterpart in Australia, Shiraz. Although both grapes are genetically the same, they are very different in style. And for you to truly appreciate the elegance and femininity of Syrah, you must go back to where it all began!

Thinking about Northern Rhone, you immediately sing… La, La, La!Made famous by Guigal, the 3 famous plots of La Mouline La Landonne, and La Turque are some of the most sought after bottles in the world. Let’s not forget Hermitage wines which have been dominating the Fine Wine circuit as much as Bordeaux and Burgundy have. But they are not all about high prices as Rhone Valley wines are still some of the most affordable Fine Wines in the market! You definitely get the bang for your buck!

Rene Rostaing Cote Rotie La Landonne 1994
4.5/5!
Almost Bordeaux Alike!

“I was having Peking Duck tonight and thought hard about what to pair it with, so I thought perhaps the earthly character of Cote Rotie may match the duck.

Was shocked at the nose; very ripe fruits and aged/wet tobacco. Palate was almost Bordeaux alike; earthly, wet earth, mellow and very pleasant, very similar to a Pessac Leognan. 94 wasn’t a great vintage, but it served it’s purpose, blended in with the sweetness of the duck sauce quite well. René Rostaing was good at winemaking.”

Jean Louis Chave Saint Joseph 2010
4/5!
Much Better!

“I had a same label but vintage of 2009, it was a disaster and I almost wrote the label off. But then a spare bottle was sitting around waiting to be consumed so I took my guts and opened it. Wasn’t as bad as I thought, in fact quite enjoyable. Quite an earthly nose as well as the palate, thick and decent lushness of the juice, although acidity was on a slightly higher side. The good fruits more than made up the weakness. JL Chave labels seemed to be quite a roller coaster.”
