The Rare pearl of the Domaine du Pegau, only produced by nature during beautiful years in the colors of great vintages that the Cuvée Da Capo shows itself. A plot selection of Crau, this cuvée is a traditional blend of 13 Châteauneuf du Pape grape varieties with a majority of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre expresses the generosity and character of the hundred-year-old vines planted in a soil of silica sand. Only 8 vintages were made (1998, 2000, 2003, 2007, 2010, 2015, 2016, 2020) this special wine has been a worldwide success.

Coming from a top vintage from CDP, and obviously their flagship cuvee, wasn’t made every vintage, and only release them for great vintages. So this rare gem is obviously a rare find. I decanted it less than an hour, the first whiff was filled with pharmaceutical medicinal nose, but it quickly got blown off, left with large amount of black currant and dark fruits. Although predominantly Grenache, it didn’t taste like Rayas, the king of CDP. A tad too sweet on the body, although very elegant and comforting, with very well integrated tannins and silky finishing. It does have the potential to go much further with age. (4/2019)
Robert Parker Wine Advocate - 10 Points
The debut vintage for their luxury old-vine cuvee, which is over 90% Grenache, but in theory made from all 13 authorized red wine varietals in Chateauneuf du Pape, the 1998 Cuvee da Capo is a monumental Chateauneuf du Pape. It was actually splendid to drink in its first 5-6 years of life, and then shut down very firmly, and is now just coming out of this dormant period. It is much more delineated than it was in its fat, grapy, almost overripe youthful state, and now shows extraordinary precision and definition. It is still a massive wine, opaque ruby/purple to the rim, with notes of camphor, meat juices, roasted herbs, licorice, pepper, and spice. Thick, unctuously textured, but with zesty acidity and sweet tannin, the wine is still very young, and not yet an adolescent. This is one 1998 Chateauneuf du Pape that will age for 30-40 years, and no doubt be prodigious with another decade of cellaring. (6/2010)
Wine Spectator - 98 Points
Notably more youthful and lively than either the Reservée or Cuvée Laurence, the 1998 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée da Capo offers a massive, full-bodied and decadent profile to go with ripe, full-throttle notes of cassis, licorice, roasted herbs, Asian spice and garrigue. The first vintage of this tiny production cuvee and coming all from the old vines of La Crau and mostly rolled pebble soils, it's just now at the early stages of maturity and has plenty of life ahead of it. Nevertheless, there's absolutely no harm in opening bottles today. (8/2015)
