Lange Freedom Hill Chardonnay 2020 vs.

Jean-Claude Ramonet Saint Aubin 1er Cru Les Murgers des Dents de Chien 2019

    9.25/10

Besides Pinot Noir which is the key production for Lange, they also produce Chardonnay wines. I have tasted a bottle of the past vintage, and I’m rather impressed with the quality. As you can see, I did the comparison using a Premier Cru from burgundy to pitch against this New World Chardonnay. The outcome is quite stunning. Ramonet is a big name in burgundy producing very stunning wines that needs no introduction. Les Murgers des Dents de Chien is a great plot in Saint-Aubin, which is overlooking the famed Montrachet and Chevalier Montrachet Grand Cru vineyards. This wine is of very classic burgundy style, soft and feminine are the key characters. It definitely deserves its Premier Cru status. Lange is a totally different breed with very crisp and taut style. Perhaps the sparring is of totally irrelevant due to the extremely different style, but I still find it interesting to have an opinion on the fight. The power of the New World Wine could not overwhelm the Old World style, and Ramonet guarded its territory like a solid wall. Meanwhile, Ramonet’s classic backward style also could not asset any influence over Lange Chardonnay. At the end of the day, I have to call it a truce for this match. It all boils down to what the drinker prefers what kind of style for their white wine, thus this is really beyond my recommendation as I think both wines are very well made.

Lange Three Hills Cuvée 2021 vs.

Bouchard 1er Cru Beaune du Chateau 2019

    9.25/10

Bouchard has been producing this wine since 1970. Beaune du Chateau is a blend of Pinot Noir that comes from 17 Beaune Premier Cru vineyards. A whiff and I’m assured of quality production with dark cherries blended with some fragrant floral and spicy notes. A sip and it’s a definitive wine that belongs to the Premier Cru category; the finesse and elegance stood tall, very refined and silky smooth; the main point is the long finishing of this wine. Lange Three Hills Cuvee Pinot Noir fruits were picked from their established vineyards of Dundee Hills, Freedom Hill and Yamhill vinyards, the blend is slightly more elegant than the Lange Reserve I reviewed a few days ago. The wine was bright and very forward with its fruit, it tried to put up a fight with Bouchard with its rather powerful fruits, however, the finesse and elegance of Bouchard, especially the long finishing, still maintained an upper hand over Three Hills Cuvee. It’s no doubt the French style of elegance cannot be suppressed by powerful fruits from the New World alone, it will take a lot more elements to wreak havoc on the Old World style.

    Lange Pinot Noir Reserve 2021

    vs

Pascal Bouley Volnay 1er Cru Robardelle 2014

    9/10

Using a 1er cru from burgundy to pitch against the cheapest range of this Lange from Willamette Valley may not be a fair match, but we are trying to prove a point that we have sourced very good quality New World Wine to benefit our consumers, and also to stress that we quality assured our wines before we bring them in (i.e. we put them through stress test in blind tasting first.) If I’m the judge awarding the winner based upon the first sip, the vote would have gone to Lange as the Volnay was too dry and skinny on the fruits. However, we keep stressing in the past 1er Cru will need some time to open up, as time goes by, 1er Cru wines will evolve and morph into a different character. Thus, we gave a fair chance for Volnay till the 3rd glass, we did notice Volnay has opened up, and showed good finesse and elegance, however, it was dry and lacked fruits to go against the Lange. Lange, being a screw-cap wine, on a whiff may imply cheap wine, though the vanilla also implies oak infused, decent quality fruits. The fruits are really the hallmark of this Reserve as its richness, power and nuance keeps supressing the Volnay. It’s a one-sided match, as the Lange keeps playing offensive and Volnay being on the defensive side. I did further research and found that International Wine Report gave this Lange Reserve 95 points. Enough points to substantiate our claims of this good quality label.
